VST Export: Best practices?

Aside from the things outlined in the wiki, are there any guidelines you should follow to get the best performance from exported VSTs?
Also: is there a way to reduce the number of parameters the VST is exported with? All the ones I export list 256 parameters, even if only the first three or four are used.

The save as Vst is an option too recent to have a good view of the good practices, but a good and the more simplest possible conception is the first answer.
actually, you can't change the parameters number, could be maybe improved in the future.
