For a software that is so frequently updated (no complaints!!!) it is more difficult than I would like to restore everything to correct functioning after an upgrade. Would it be possible to create a parallel folder to 'files' that contains all the user versions of things? I have custom templates, custom UI skins, master section, global settings, custom modules and scripts, what else??? A lot of stuff to move from an old install folder every time I upgrade. It would be so great if it all was in one place

In my case, if I don't save and reload the master section, I don't even get sound out of my wkp!

Just a thought....

Thanks,
-eric

I understand your point of view but about "master section, global settings, custom modules and scripts no need for a specific folder..?
master can be recall from the menu /file /load master
global setting from the global setup/file
script and user modules can be in your personal library..?

Well, I have certain user modules and scripts in specific places in the folder heirarchy so they show up where I need them on the modules page of the browser.

And loading master and global.... well you have to make sure and copy them first from the old install.

When firefox updates, I don't need to do anything. I just go back to searching. But I need to do a lot of testing with usine (or I guess an itemized list of upgrade actions) or I will show up on a gig, and things won't work.

You can save your master and global in a folder out of your Usine folder, so you just have to move your library ...

I wonder if perhaps creating scripts in windows could make this process easier? One script to backiup all your essential Usine files before upgrading and another script to put all of your files back in the appropriate locations after upgrading.

Well, mostly I'm complaining because this happened:

I upgraded to usine 5.5, everything seemed to be fine, with some basic testing. Got to a gig, and the master volume and EQ didn't work. Oops. So I hastily wired something up. Then later, went searching for defaultMaster.master in the old files folder, and loaded that, but that didn't work either--it was empty.... Did some more fixes to the master section to get my looper working. Then it finally occured to me to open the old wkp in 5.25, and save its master section. This worked, and now I have my old master back. (I still don't know where that data was stored....) Problem is now I have to merge the new branch under 5.5 (with a bunch of new work, but also a bunch of now-unnecessary master kludges) with the functionality of the old master section, and get it all debugged and working right again.

I can do all this, and a script wizard (which I'm not) could automate the transition in windows so this wouldn't happen again, but I'm really talking about the issue of making usine easier for people who are less technically inclined than I am. Yes I know there are workarounds, the most obvious and easiest of which is for me to make (and keep updated) a list of all the things I have to save, move and reload in order to upgrade and have everything work correctly.

I'm just saying that this process could be made much easier. It's just my belief that for every one person like me who complains about something like this, there's a half-dozen out there that just give up on the program. "I tried to upgrade, and it didn't work".

Just food for thought.
