i'm still a noob when it comes to usine patching, and there's a lot to learn, but i've been experimenting a little with the launchpad (see screenshot and linked patch).. things seems to work pretty well, actually, except for one thing... sometimes, when turning the audio engine off and then on again, it looks like some midi messages are being sent out to the launchpad, so that some lights are wrongly lighting up.. don't know what the problem is.. am i using the midi in/out modules correctly? what about 'unpack' in the midi in module? what does it actually do?

no, all is ok in your patch, but you've found one the problem with launchpad . the solution is to send a control change message
( code1 and code2 = 0 ) this will reset the launchpad to the good mode . But it's a problem when you want to create some functions pads..
Don't know how the max appz works and deal with this, but actually i admit i don't have found a stable solution for this.
