Hi guys, i'm thinking about getting a new machine and wondering what usines multi core support is like. i'm jumping from an old dothan so anything will be an improvement but specifically i'm curious about the new quad core penryns - how does usine handle multi cores? i've seen the dual core switch in the setup buit obviously it makes no difference for me now - how well is usine optimised for this stuff and will the same optimisation work with the quad cores?

Multi core is very hard to implement for a modular environment like Usine. By definition you can't define the order of tasks to process, and this order can change if you change your routing in real time.
Usine is not like a normal DAW. In cubase every thing is fixed by advance.
So to resume, Usine use on core for audio and another for display.
Actually a quad core is not really necessary.

Maybe quad makes more sense, when Usine is used as a VST in a host, like Reaper for an example?

I was thinking about this, too. Does it make a difference to have 3 instances of Usine VST in a host program when using multiple cores? Or do the three instances share the same resources and still run their 'sound task' on one core?

As a Vst , Usine optimization depends on the Host optimization.
If your host is multi-core Usine is so, and each instance of Uisne works as a separate thread.

thanks for the replies - very nteresting stuff!! sounds like raw cpu speed might be better than quad core... unless i maybe host usine in ableton or reaper... what about vista 64 bit - does Usine run well with that?

something else has occurred to me - what about with multiclient asio drivers - each instance of usine would then utilise separate cores wouldn't it?

fair enough. how about vista 64 bit? does usine work ok with that?

Normally works but in 32bits mode
