My son & his friends have been dabbling with ambient & EDM. I don't want to dive in too deep - as I don't know if this is a teenage fad or if it will get serious.

In other words, I'm justifiably cheap...

I purchased an MPD-218 - and I'm pretty surprised how easy this $100USD device was to setup... I think I'll use it more than my son.
- USB powered
- 16x3 pads (3 banks of 16) with aftertouch
- 6x3 knobs (3 banks of 6)
- Pretty versatile programming of Note, PC, CC, & even NPRN output
- Extremely basic note repeat function; internal vs external clock
- 16 presets of all of the above
- Extremely EASY to program, it has a wonderful, simple, functional editor

Limitations at this price, of course:
- It can't do sysex.
- It can't do sequences of MIDI control data - it is just one MIDI command each control (although it does provide NRPN support).
- It doesn't store clips/loops/sequences.

This is simply a triggering device, but with a surprisingly solid feel. They kept it simple, so it just WORKS.

you should also wait for the behringer xtouch compact which looks promising!
"Ethernet interface for RTP (Real-Time Protocol) MIDI " is compatible with Usine Midi Lan ?

I love to hear about the MC Mix and Artist series too....
I did finally pick up an MC transport at a steal which I have working.....I guess.

I have never been too impressed with driver support on at least windows. There are times where the unit seems to need powered off and on, or I have to restart the PC. The Mackie/Hui mode I am not as fond of either. You must enable it per application in control panel separate of their Eucon Control software, then in most cases a restart is in order. At the time it puts like 8 additional midi interfaces that aren't even used in the listings as well. On more than one occasion I have had it blue screen or lock up windows too..

Their support seems really good though. I just put a ton of effort in trying to get going and it shouldn't have been as difficult.

1. Setup can be a pain and not straight forward if using Avid products without Mac/Protools.
2. Windows driver support just does not seem on par completely.
3. Its a great hardware unit, at this time though I just use for the transport buttons and jog for Sonar X3 because setup difficulty
4. I am leery always of Avid as what you see is not what you get if you are using windows, as well as a different software from protools

Hopefully this helps.
I would love to hear positive feedback as well for the Mix and Artist.
I too however would hate to drop that money and not get what expected.
Worse case if you put time in you probably can get working, I just wasn't expecting the small transport to be so non-auto-magical...:)

I'm interesting in changing my old BCF2000.
Did somebody have experience with Euphonix MC Mix DAW Controller or the new AVID Artist Mix.
Comparing to the BCF, they look really robust and well manufactured.
For my purpose, the BCF was good, the motorized faders work fine, but the rotary encoders and the push buttons aren't very stable in time and they do not respond quickly.
MC Mix or Artist Mix support Eucon, HUI et Mackie Control, and I don't know if they can be integrated fine in an Hollyhock setup.

Thanks for sharing experience.
Regards

Sylvain
