How can I enjoy this style of control with an item controlled by the grid?

"Pass if changed" doesn't lock up the inlet it's connected to; it operates as if you connected something to an inlet, which gets the current value, and then disconnect,

At the moment when an item is controlled by the grid I am not able to control the switch or even change it. Adding a pass if change module somehow? Is that the secret?
